Bradshaw is walking across Texas! That’s right, our employees have decided to take the challenge and walk their way to better health. In an effort to help everyone establish more physical activity and start moving more during the work day, Bradshaw has joined the Walk Across Texas program which encourages physical movement of any kind but with an emphasis on walking.
This past Monday, all Bradshaw employees were given a pedometer and were encouraged to sign up for the Walk Across Texas challenge. We enjoyed a breakfast of bagels, yogurt and fruit to kick off the eight week challenge!
So, how does the challenge work? Well, there are five groups of eight employees and each employee is encouraged to walk 13 miles per week! If the entire group of eight achieves this individual goal, they will have walked 830 miles across the great state of Texas! Walking includes the number of total steps taken during the entire day which calculates into total miles for the day.
Employees are encouraged to join together each day for 20 minutes to walk around the building three times which is roughly a mile. In addition, employees are encouraged to get up and move from their desks during the day…walk around the warehouse, print to a printer across the building instead of the one by your desk, or park further away in the parking lot. Some of the benefits of walking are:
- Walking burns 3-5 times the calories that sitting does.
- Walking strengthens your bones, while being easy on your joints.
- Walking lowers blood pressure and helps to reduce stress.
- Walking cuts cholesterol and reduces the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and more.
Best of all, walking can be done almost anywhere, requires no equipment, and is FREE!
So, the next time you talk to someone at Bradshaw, ask them how many steps they’ve taken that day! Every step counts!
